Actually, I am staying with Paul and Amy at their lovely home in Valencia (yes, home of Cunard, also!!).
I arrived in LA just before noon and was whisked off by Paul and Amy to the Getty Museum for lunch. The Getty Center is a stunning complex, designed by Richard Meier of glass, aluminum and pale travertine. Completed in 1997 and consisting of several exhibition pavilions and extensive gardens and fountains, the complex sits atop two ridges of a hill in the Santa Monica Mountains. A controversial project, dubbed at times a mini Acropolis, the pavilions surround a central courtyard, house J. Paul Getty's collections of pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs. We visited several pavilions before a delicious lunch washed down with a St. Supery. After lunch, we visited a special exhibition of Irving Penn's photography. Some may remember his fashion work for Vogue. This exhibit, entitled "Small Trades" highlights tradesmen in New York, London and Paris. Penn, working over a period of 15 or so years, experimenting with various techniques, managed to bring dignity to the men and women who delivered coal, cleaned sewers and cut beef. It was fascinating.
